Statement of Purpose
In the 6th grade, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. The way I associate and learn about the world around me has always been complex. One of the most uncomfortable situations I used to experience was touching another person. But over time, I learned the significance of touch in my life. Touch is the sense through which I understand the world.
Touch is not the only sense that I utilize in communicating, I can verbalize just fine, but my voice feels heard best in three dimensions. Sculpture has given me the tools to understand not only myself, but also the world and people around me.
While working on my portfolio for Georgia Honors Program, I explored the kinesthetic use of charcoal on paper. I created a self-portrait but I did so blind folded on the floor. Being a very flexible person, I was able to lay my face in between my feet with my arms outstretched to draw what I felt. This was a turning point in my exploration as an artist because it opened my eyes to relating touch to drawing; an art form I hadn’t yet embraced as one of my strengths. My purpose in pursuing a career in art is to achieve a higher grade of understanding for not only myself but for those that view what I create.
